Master Ryuho Okawa, founder and president of Happy Science, gave a lecture titled “The American Mind” at the Happy Science General Headquarters on Oct 25, 2012.
In this speech, he emphasized the importance of restoring the values of justice and liberty, which America has cherished for a long time, forgiving past mistakes, and looking for a new frontier.
Right now, the balance of power is changing in Asia as China emerges as the hegemonic state. Yet, Master Ryuho Okawa still believes in America’s ability to honor its promise and to create a better world through the universal values of justice and liberty for all mankind.
Taking all of today’s current affairs and the above elements into account, Master Ryuho Okawa stated that Americans should elect the Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney into office.
The following is an extract from the lecture titled “The American Mind.”
1. ‘President Romney’ Would Be a Good Choice for America and the Rest of the World
Master:Today’s lecture is regarding ‘The American Mind.’
In America, a presidential race is going on between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama, and they are neck-and-neck at the moment. The most recent poll was dead even at 47 percent. There were three debates between the two candidates; Mitt Romney won the first, and Barack Obama won the second and the third. The conclusion, however, will depend on their ability to deal with current affairs.
Mitt Romney should win for the sake of the global economy. It is good for both America and the rest of the world. Even so, Romney and Obama are now tied, and the American media is supporting Obama because he is a liberalist. The American media cannot criticize an African-American candidate, because they wish to avoid being labeled as racist. That is why they do not criticize Barack Obama albeit all of his failures in the course of his three-and-half year presidency.
Mr. Romney is an intelligent man, of course, and he is good at earning money. He is also an expert in business. The American people are counting on his economic skills; simply put, they are hoping he will teach them how to earn more money during this economic crisis. There is a hurdle, though: he is not very skilled at getting support from the intellectuals and the mass media.
One reason is his faith. He is a Mormon, and Mormonism is a minor religion in America with approximately six million followers in the world. It’s a small sect. In the history of the United States, there has been only one Catholic president named John F. Kennedy. Aside from him, the presidents have all been non-Catholic Christians and Protestants.
2. Obama’s Spiritual Tendency and America’s Decline
Barack Obama, on the other hand, was an exception. He was not a Caucasian. He was skeptical about his Christian beliefs in a way. Whether or not he attended an Islamic school in his younger days, that in itself is a small issue; the main point of interest concerning it is whether or not his Islamic schooling has had any influence on his current thinking as president, which may be the case.
His guardian spirit taught us, as I wrote in my book 2012, that he belonged to another religion in his past life, and he sometimes has the tendency to resist against a greater power. He favors the minority. That is the tendency of his soul.
Mr. Obama is currently the President of the United States. America began its decline almost four years ago. Roughly 50 percent of all American people believe that the United States of America is declining.
Other countries feel the same way. In Asia, Europe, Africa, and in other parts of the world, people are thinking that America, the once great America, is in decline just like the ancient Roman Empire. However, the American hegemony, which was very short and lasted only 100 years, cannot compare to the 1,000 years of Roman rule.
In the beginning of the 21st century, the people of the world, especially the knowledgeable people, predicted that this century would be the age of America, because it was the supreme power in the world. They also believed that the age of America would continue through this century into the next one. However, the situation has changed. People think quite differently now under Obama’s presidency.
Mr. Obama is a liberalist and it’s not a bad thing in the truest sense of the word. From another standpoint, though, liberalists usually do nothing to stop and nothing to pressure the kinds of groups or countries that suppress human rights, whether it is in their own country, at some kind of religion or group. They are too weak to take military actions; they hesitate to use military power, and liberalists mainly depend on the power of speech or diplomacy. That’s their reality.
Yet, Chinese power is emerging now, and it is increasing as time goes on. The dark shadow, cast by that government’s power, is spreading across the Pacific. This is now a turning point in the balance of power.
3. If Mitt Romney Wins, America Could Restore Itself, and Fight Once Again to Defend the Rights of the Rest of the World
If Mitt Romney becomes the next president, perhaps he will create pressure on China as well as provide aid to some parts of the Japanese defense and diplomatic channels. America could become its real, true self again, and fight in the name of God and in the name of justice. Americans will do their best for that cause and they won’t look to profit from it. They will do their best in the name of God or in the name of the Goddess of Justice. They will do their best. Mitt Romney will, too.
America has a new illness and its roots are financial. There will appear a fiscal cliff at the end of this year. One component of the cliff is a reduction of taxes, which started when George W. Bush was in office. The other component is an automatic lessening of the fiscal budget, that is, the national expenditure, which will take effect when the year changes from 2012 to 2013.
These two components comprise a fiscal cliff. They will mark a further drop in the American economy. America will soon be unable to do anything about the economic crisis in the EU. Needless to say, America will be unable to prevent the rapid economic decline in China as well as in Japan and other Asian countries. They won’t even be able to assist the African countries.
Obama cannot overcome this fiscal cliff, and a decline in economy will extend for another four years. Someone asked me whether or not Romney could conquer this fiscal problem, and I am willing to answer that question now: it will be a tough challenge for him.
Romney wants to fight against evil as seen from the eyes of God, but he does not have enough of a budget available for military spending. He may also have to shrink the budget. It may be inevitable for him. A crisis in America will come no matter who becomes the next president.
4. Americans Should Forgive Themselves for Their Past Mistakes
The U.S. suffered a lot from the Iraqi War in addition to the War on Terrorism, so their minds have changed about those efforts. The shift in belief began with the Vietnam War, but at the time of 9/11, the military still had confidence in their sense of justice.
The U.S. military took action, and they attacked Iraq. A lot of people died in vain. At first, the reason for their attack was that Iraq apparently had Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD). The American military leadership said that they had to find and rid the world of those weapons in order to make peace in the Middle East as well as to prevent an attack on the United States and other countries. Contrary to their statements, no such weapons existed in Iraq.
Therefore, I propose that America should again become the country that its own people can admire. The Americans should forget about their past mistakes. Their military has been through a lot of battles, and they have killed many people.
A large number of those soldiers now suffer from their deeds, and they have nightmares in their sleep. Of course, those deeds were done in the name of God, but it is not so easy to interpret American justice nowadays. If the American soldiers still believe that their motives were decent, and they even now want to protect the good people of the world from evil powers, they should forgive themselves even if they feel that they’ve made mistakes.
A weak America is a bad symbol for the citizens of their country. Now, New York is just like Gotham City in the Batman movies. New York, known as the Big Apple, is where evil powers rule, and only one person stands up and fights the evil powers.
Their views on heroes may explain why they have lost their strategic, military thinking. Why? It is a philosophical problem. When one person kills another person, it is a sin. Sometimes it’s the reason people to go to hell. On the other hand, if a warrior kills another warrior during combat, and under the honorable command of a just leader, then it is not a sin.
This is common sense throughout the world. Fighters protect their own citizens, their own people, against evil powers. There are many reasons why they fight.
It’s simply not possible to reduce everything down to one person’s bad motives; it is a situation where people receive a command from the national leader or group leader. They even sometimes act on an unheard voice from God. Therefore, taking people’s lives are not considered murder in these cases.
5. America, Fulfill Your Mission From God!
Americans also have a very serious problem of racism now. Arabs are gaining power in the country, and some Americans are having a difficult time dealing with those people because they are very different. Americans must learn to accept new types of people. To be tolerant should be the definition of a country such as America that is truly composed of immigrants.
In addition, American life is very complicated nowadays, because domestic and international terrorists are quite active. They often act individually. Suicidal terrorists are incredibly hard to understand. The murderer kills him or herself, and also kills other people, e.g. by equipping dynamite to some body part or by setting off a car bomb. It is absolutely inconceivable and incomprehensible to the American people.
Because terrorism continues to this day, air transportation in America is quite difficult. All U.S. citizens, as well as foreigners, that decide to travel in and out of the country, must be checked one by one as if they were terrorists-to-be. This doubtful custom has decreased everyone’s overall sense of freedom and liberty. It is a cancer that is eating away at the U.S. right now. For these reasons, I think that the Americans must feel very sad regarding their loss of freedom and mercy.
If the Americans asked me to propose a new policy for the next president, I would say, “Find a new frontier.” It means to hear a new command from God. It means Americans should not abandon their destiny to fulfill their mission from God. They should not abandon their pride to protect Earth.
They may be in decline, but they are still the number one military power in the world. They must fight against evil powers. There is an evil power in Asia, and the people there do not formally believe in God. If such people expand their empire, they will destroy this world created by God.
6. ‘The American Mind’: Believe in God and Justice, and Act to Better the World
This is ‘The American Mind.’ I know very well that I am not the President of the United States, but I would still like to speak directly to the American people and tell them, “Please don’t lose ‘The American Mind.’” You may hear that you are in decline, but please never lose it.
Whether it will be President Obama or President Romney, please do not forget your mission. It’s very important. To be American is to believe in God and justice, and to act in the name of justice in order to make a better world. It is your mission as Americans. Other countries will follow you. I daresay it is your mission from God.
I’m just a Japanese citizen and I’m not an elected official like the Prime Minister. I’m certainly not the President of the United States. However, please let me state this: “Do not lose ‘The American Mind,’” or you will forsake the original spirit of your founding fathers.
Our Happy Science places great importance on the study of human history.
We hold that human history was not producted by accident or by the trials and errors of people of this world.
Naturally, in the course of history, people have made numerous mistakes.
Often love and righteousness seemed to have been lost and dark clouds seemed to envelop certain eras.
But when seen with truth, human history has always been watched and protected by the high sprits of the heavenly world.
And, Angels of Light have intermittently incarnated in this world to create advanced cultures and civilizations.
Thirty-seven to thirty-eight hundred years ago, Angels of Light such as Zeus and Apollo appeared in Greece and built the ancient Greek civilization.
About thirty-two hundred years ago, Moses appeared and led the Israelites to emancipation from Egypt.
He gave the people the Ten Commandments and showed them the righteous way to live as human beings.
Twenty-seven to twenty-eight hundred years ago, the Lord God of thw Heavenly Center (Ame-no-minakanushi-no-kai in Japanese) and the Sun Goddess (Amaterusu-omikami in Japanese), deities of Shintoism, appeared in Japanese in Japan and ruled the country as representives of God.
They laid the foundation of Japan.
Twenty-five to twenty-six hundred years ago, Gautama Buddha appeared in India and preached Buddhism, saving multitudes of lost and misguided people.
About the same period in China, Angels of Light led by Confucius, Meng-tzu, Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu appeared in this world and laid the foundations of the great Chinese culture.
Futher, twenty-four to twenty-five hundred years ago, such Guiding Sprits of Light as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle appears Greece and laid the foundations of Western philosophy.
Two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ appeared in Nazareth preaching love.
He has saved an infinite number of people up to the present era.
In the sixteenth century, Angels of Light such as Martin Luther were sent to this world and carried out Reformation.
All major religions such as Shintoism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Christianity have flowed into Japan.
And, many Angels of Light have incarnated in Japan dyring the second half of the twentieth century and are about to embark on a great salvation project.
In the spritual sense, Japan today appears to be one great holy land.
Happy science has established a clear over-view of the universe.
The world we are living in is not simply divided into the physical world and the spritual world and the spritual world, but is involved in a multi-dimensional and high-dimensional universe.
We hold that the Existence of the one ultimate God is of extremely high dimensions, beyond the tenth dimension, and that such super-dimensional Existance has formed from.
Its will the worlds of the tenth dimension and below.
For exsample, around the earth we live on, there is the tenth dimension, where planetary consciousness, not human sprit, exists.
Below the tenth dimension is the ninth dimension where the most developed human sprit dwell.
This realm is called the "Cosmic Realm"(or Uchu-kai in Japanese) or the "Sun Realm"(or Taiyo-kai in Japanese).
Below the ninth dimension is the eighth dimension.
Spirit that dwell here are those who have supreme leader in various fields such as religion, philosophy, and science.
This realm is called the "diamond Realm"(or Nyorai-kai in Japanese).
Futher below in the seventh dimension.
This realm is called "Sacred Heavenly Realm"(or Bosatsu-kai in Japanese).
People who lived to love and showed mercy to others when in the physical world dwell in this realm as sprit.
Below the seventh dimention is the sixth dimention.
This is called the "Godly Realm"(or Komyo-kai in Japanese) and it is inhabited by sprits who lived as scholars, artist, religious leaders, philosophers and specialists in other fields who contributed to the evolution of mankind.
Futher below is the fifth dimention.
This is called the "Spiritual Realm" (or Seirei-kai in Japanese) in the narrow sense of the world.
People who were very faithful, spiritual and led good lives when living in the physical world go to the Spiritual Realm.
Then, there is the fouth dimention.
It is simply known as the "Posthumous Realm" (or Yu-kai in Japanese).
The dark regions of this realm are called the "Hell Realm" (or Jigoku-kai in Japanese).
Those sprit who are aware of their death and know of their spritual existance dwell in so-called "Astral Realm" (or Seirei-kai in Japanese).
The world in which we live in physical form is called the third dimension, the "Phenomenal World" or the "Physical World."
It is also generally called "this world" as opposed to the "other world."
Human beings can, in truth, inhabit any of the realms from the fourth to the ninth dimensions, but they are reincarnated repeatedly into this world for soul training and to advance their spritual understanding of life.
They are tested in the physical world to see whether or not they can realize the spritual nature of their existence.
This third dimension is a world into which inhabitants of the different development levels of consciousness are born with equality.
In this sense, this world is a superb training ground in which to experience invaluable lessons which cannot be experienced in the other world.
Our physical appearances seem to differ considerably one person to anther.
But, more striking than any external differences are the internal differences, those of our minds.
We emphasize the research of the mind because the study and understanding of its characteristics, actions, functions and mechanisms will lead us to principles of happiness.
The human mind is a mysterious entity.
Not only it be abstract and speculative, it also is a concrete and sensual entity.
On the one hand, the mind is like an infinitely developing dream; while, on the other hand, the mind has certain qualities that obey the laws od physics.
Let us now consider the relationships of the spirit, the soul and the mind.
The spirit is an energy from of intelligence and an individuated entity split from the Life of God.
Spirit can dwell in the spiritual world of the fourth dimension and higher as conscious forms, or they can descend to the physical world of the third dimension and live embodied in human, animal or plant forms.
Those spirits which experience life in this physical world dwelling in individual life forms are called souls.
The soul is the unit of action of the spiritual life form.
The core part of the soul is called the mind.
The mind is the central part of the soul and functions as the fundamental decision-making element.
Therefore, what determines the course of our lives the "mind".
When we research the principles of happiness, our central themes shall be "What is the mind?,"
"What are function?" and "How should we control the mind's functions?"
The human mind is not a small thing located somewhere in the human body.
Rather, it serves as a line connecting the humans living in this third dimensional phenomenal world with the world of higher dimensions.
The mind's inner frontiers are inifinite in width, depth and height.
There is within the mind a part that is directly connected to the higher realms; the fourth dimension, the fifth dimension, up to the dimension.
"Happy Science" is a organization of people researching the principle of human happiness, and new world religion from Japan founded by Master Ryuho Okawa.
When we reflect upon the history of mankind, we find that people of every age have sought ways, through which happiness can be attained.
It is possible to say that religions, philosophies, general thoughts, politics, economics, art, literature, scientific technology, medicine and education are all fruits of the wisdom and hard labor of people who have sought "happiness."
We now live in a complex age when academic fields are becoming fragmented and specialzed while many new religious sects are coming forth and competing with one another.
In the midst of this confusion, people are losing sight of the principles of happiness.
Let us then, living in such an era, attempt to bring together the various disciplines, schools of thought and teachings of different religious sects, find the golden light which flows through them, discover the principles of happiness within them and appeal to all human beings.
Now, at the the twenty-one century, let us collect and condense all cultural inheritance of mankind, all the knowledge and all the spiritual energy to carry out scientific research into happiness.
The Principle of Happiness
We hold that there are four principles of happiness "love", "wisdom", "self-reflection" and "progress".
The first principle of happiness is love, its pursuit and its practice.
Love sheds light of this world.
Love sheds light on the minds and hearts of people and society.
Love reveals the true nature of man as the child of God.
There is no happiness without love.
Love is an egg of happiness.
When there is no love, happiness cannot hatch forth.
The love that creates happiness is the "love that gives" or "love without return."
This love is in constant circulation.
When offered freely, it flows back to the giver in untold ways.
The opposite, the "love that takes," is "attachment".
When we do not release love into the circulation, love does not flow from others into our lives.
First, we must give love.
This is the beginning.
The second principle of happiness is "wisdom".
Modern society is knowledge-oriented, and this is an era of inteligence.
The principles of happiness which we of this era embrace must appeal to and be digested by intellects in order to pass throught the "knowledge filter."
While we are exploring the "World of Real Existence" beyond this third dimensional world and carrying out scientific research into the multi-dimensional universe, we must determine that the contents and result of our research will appeal to the intellectual and logical nature of man today and in the future.
As the objects of our research including the sprit and the soul are revealed, we will wield the "intellectual scalpel" with courage.
We will truly demonstrate a rational sprit throughout our endeavors.
The third principle of happiness is "self reflection".
Self reflection involves looking on one's self and examining one's life.
We often attribute our happiness or unhappiness to external causes.
We tend to think that influences from another person or from our enviroment make us happy or unhappy.
The true causes of our happiness or unhappiness, however, are usually found within ourselves.
It is said that "the mind of a person that we see is a mirror before us."
When another person appears to be malicious, we must deeply question whether or not the maliciousnesses a projection of our own minds.
Furthermore, we must not blame our environment for unhappiness.
If we can love and embrace our fate as Helen Keller did her triple handicap, our lives will become illuminated.
We must confront our own minds and quest for "the right mind" sincerely everyday.
Only when erroneous thoughts and attachments have been eliminated through reflection, can we discover our truly free inner selves.
The fourth principle of happiness is "progress".
We know genuine happiness when we feel that our souls or personalities are growing everyday, or when people around us realizing lives full or joy, or when we, ourselves, are making progress in self actualization as conscientious children of God.
Whether or not we are happy depends upon whether or not we are developing.
Happiness is not a static condition which can be had when we have attained material success or feelings of achievement, in the journey or in the process of our advancement.
The journey we undertake is of infinite growth towards the one true God and of eternal self-improvement.
